Monkeying Around
6/23/10- It's been a while since this site was updated. Now that the weather has gotten warmer, there hasn't been much time to crochet. I did complete my sock monkey hat for father-in-law. As mentioned earlier, the hat is a pattern from www.bernat.com as a free pattern. It's the Bernat Softee Chunky Man's hat and scarf set. I love the bernat site. The patterns are usually very wonderful and I am happy with how my hat came out.
I used all bernat yarn in softee chunky:
1 skein of white
1 skein of twisted taupe
1 skein of red
a little worsted weight black yarn for embroidering mouth and nostrils
I used a k hook as in the bernat pattern.
I started the pattern in white and crocheted as in the pattern, until I reached the increase of stitches to 60sc. I did another row in even sc around.
I switched to twisted taupe to do the round that increases stitches to 62 and then just continued to work as in the bernat pattern until it was the length that I desired it to be.
Here is where I made this hat it into my own sock monkey hat. I still used a k hook for the ears and the muzzle.
Ears(make 2):
With twisted taupe
Row 1: make a magic circle of 6sc.
Row2: 2sc around. (12sc)
Row 3: sc in first two sts., 2sc in next st. around.((16sc)
Row 4: Inc to 20 sc by increasing in every 4th st around. (20sc)
Row 5: Inc to 24 sc by increasing in every 5th st around. (24sc)
Row 6: Inc to 28 sc by increasing in every 6th st around. (28sc)
Row 7-8: Sc evenly around (28sc)
Row 9: Dec in every 3rd to 4th st around. (21sc)
Row10: Dec in every 2nd to 3rd st around (14sc).
End off and close the two sides of the ear by whipstitching together both loops. Now the ears are ready to be attached to the hat. I like to pin my pieces to see if the spots look okay and even on both sides before I stitch. I stitched my ears on after the muzzle.
Muzzle: Start in red-
Row1: Ch19, 2sc in second ch from hook, sc in ea of next 16 chains, 2sc in bottom ch, sc in ea of next 18 bottoms on other side. (38sc)
Row 2: 3sc in first st., sc in ea of next 18 sts., 3sc in next st., sc in ea of last 18 sts.(42sc)
Row 3: Sc in first st., 3sc in next st., sc in ea of next 20 sts., 3sc in next st., sc in ea of last nineteen sts. (46sc)
Change to white for next row-
Row 4: Sc in first two sts., 3hdc in next st., hdc in ea of next 22 sts., 3 hdc in next st., sc in ea of last 20 sts., (50sts.)
Row 5: Sc in ea of next 3sts.,hdc in ea of next 26 sts., sc in ea of last 21 sts. (50sts.)
Row 6: Sc in ea st around (50sc)
End off.
Embroider mouth and nostrils if desired.
Attach to front of hat using the same white yarn and place a little polyfill stuffing inside as you attach.
Use any kind of buttons for eyes and you may wish to cut felt circles a little bigger as I have done to place underneath your button eye,as you attach them to the hat.
As you can see by my picture, I made my own pom pom maker. You may want your pom pom bigger. All you need to do to create a pom pom maker is to take poster board and cut two circles out, in the diameter of how big you want your pom poms. Anything goes as a form such as a can; a jar; etc. Cut another circle out in the middle of both circles and sandwich the two circles together. Your yarn should be cut about a yard and a half. Just weave the yarn through your circle, and all around until it's completely covered and you have no more yarn left . Cut another piece of yarn to tie around the middle of your sandwiched circles. As you cut all around the outside of your poster board circles, you tie the piece yarn around your yarn circles and tie a few knots very tightly . Gently pull out your poster board circles out and rub the ball to make it look more authentic.
All done!!!
